The sculpture consists of seven bronze faces and one of them has been out of place since last night. The municipality of Amsterdam has reported the theft. The memorial for Nelson Mandela, the figurehead of the struggle against apartheid and later president of South Africa, is located in the park of the same name in the Zuidoost district. The memorial stone chosen by residents, designed by South African artist Mohau Modisakeng, was unveiled in the summer of 2021. The seven fragmented faces are of people living nearby. Yesterday the police and municipality received a report that one of the faces of the monolith was missing. It is unclear when the statue disappeared and who is responsible for it. Meeting place The police have started an investigation. “Given the size of the part, it has not been an easy and unobtrusive act to carry out,” said the police. A spokesman for the Southeast district tells NH Nieuws/AT5 that everything is being done to find the face. The municipality has taken several security measures at the artwork. For example, fences, a video camera and additional attachments have been placed on and around the memorial. District chairman Tanja Jadnanansing told NH Nieuws/AT5 that she was shocked by the news. “Our residents have been robbed of one of our finest works of art,” she says. “The memorial stands for freedom and previous excellent within our district. It often functions as a meeting place and is also mentioned very regularly.” source
