New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday that the city will soon open a seventh Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center at the Wingate by Wyndham hotel in Long Island City , Queens, to temporarily deal with the continuing flow of asylum seekers arriving in the city.
With an estimated number of asylum seekers having arrived in the city since Exceptional last spring at 45,600, this humanitarian aid center will create 144 books to help families with children and offer them a range of services, in addition to ensuring that they can reach their last destination, if not New York City.
“New York City serves more asylum seekers than any other city in the United States,” said Mayor Adams. “As the number of asylum seekers who have gone through our admissions process over the last 10 months has surpassed the overall number of people who were in the city’s shelter system when I took over freight, it is clear that the city urgently needs more support from our federal partners. We continue to offer more help to asylum seekers arriving than any other city in the country, treating people with care and compassion, and this seventh humanitarian aid center will help us continue that work”.
Since the beginning of this humanitarian crisis, the city has taken swift and urgent measures, managing the arrival of a growing number of asylum seekers who arrive in the city with virtually no coordination by the States of origin, opening 85 hotels as shelters and six other humanitarian services aid projects already in place, creating navigation hubs to connect asylum seekers with critical resources, enrolling children in and public schools through the Open Arms Project, organizing non-profit groups to provide additional support, and much more.
