In the UK, the upcoming New Year’s Eve will be the first without government-imposed guidelines in three years. To celebrate, the best hotels will offer champagne
“It’s going to be a very special occasion this year,” says Kurt Macher, main manager of London’s Shangri-La hotel
on the Shard, which has spectacular views of fireworks over the river and several on-site parties, complete with DJs and a five-piece band.Starting at level 34 and occupying 18 floors of the tallest building in Western Europe, the hotel
is ordering more champagne than in previous years in preparation for the holidays, which start at ₤250(US$263) by personality, compared to ₤180(US$189) in 2019.
“People are excited to celebrate and enjoy the normalcy of a genuinely grand carnival,” says Daniel Baernreuther, basic manager of the five-star Gleneagles resort in Scotland, which offers a three-night Scottish New Year break from ₤7,585(US). $9,223). Hogmanay, the Scottish word for the last day of the old year, is an annual highlight for many locals.
What you get for almost ₤8,000 (US$8,419) is a traditional celebration with food and entertainment, complete with a band of military pipers in full Scottish dress. For guests, the dress code is “black tie or a touch of tartan,” and drinks will flow at the Century Bar. There’s dinner, dancing, and the feast ends with an all-night feast at 2 am This year, there will be fireworks; Last year, the display was canceled at the last minute when the Scottish government announced the return of 1 City social distancing just days before the big carnival. “We are bringing back the dance floors,” says Baernreuther. He is also excited to welcome American guests, who traditionally make up 30% of hotel
guests. They have been missing in recent years due to pandemic travel restrictions, but began returning this summer. Cliveden is also no stranger to hosting great soirees. The stately house-turned-luxury hotel
(and site of the Profumo affair in the 1960s, when a high-ranking member of the UK government became involved with a teenage model sparking national security fears) will host a two-night party gathering New Year’s Eve (from ₤2,900(US$3,052)), with decadent celebrations to welcome in the new year, including a Champagne Black Tie Ball along with a four-course dinner and dancing until morning. The next day, there will be an “at leisure” breakfast to help clear away the unavoidable champagne hangover. The carnival continues on January 1 with another glamorous drinks reception and a three-course dinner. The hotel
says it will be like the parties former owner Nancy Astor used to have with live music and ball gowns. “People are definitely more interested in making the most of it and celebrating in style,” says Cliveden’s basic manager Francisco Macedo. “One thing that Covid has shown us is that life is too short and that is definitely a mindset that is shaping travel experiences.”He says most guests there during the holidays become regulars at the 48-room property. What do managers expect in the new year? Just a feeling that things are back to normal.”There have been so many changes in the last two years that it would be amazing to have a stable year where there is no covid and no obstacles,” says Baernreuther.
