President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, moved to the Alvorada Palace this Monday (6. Feb. 2023). They had been living in a hotel in the main region of Brasília since the weeks following the 2nd round of the 2022 election Lula and Janja returned to Brasília in the early evening after spending the day in Rio de Janeiro, where the PT member fulfilled a series of political commitments . The president and his convoy, with 9 cars and a helicopter, arrived in Alvorada around 7:54 pm
The president was staying at the Meliá hotel, in the main region of Brasília. Lula used to stay at the regional office whenever he visited the federal capital during the pre-campaign and the electoral campaign.
After being elected, on October 30 of last year, he returned to stay at the hotel. He spent weeks alternating between Brasília and São Paulo. He moved permanently after recovering from surgery on his larynx, on November 27.
In the first days of government, Janja took a team from GloboNews to Alvorada and complained about the state of building. She complained of threadbare carpets, torn seats and cracked plaster ceilings. He implied that the previous president, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), was responsible.
At breakfast with journalists, on January 12, Lula also said that there were problems in the building.
“The upper part is as if it had not been inhabited. Everything is dismantled. There is no bed, no sofa”, declared the PT candidate.
The change took longer than estimated by the Minister of Civil Affairs, Rui Costa (PT). Responsible for renovating the palace, he said on January 5 that the change should be made within 20 days– that is, by January 25.
Last week, the president publicly complained of the delay in being able to move.
He said, on January 31, in an act on social participation in his government, that there was a “no palace”. The couple moves with two dogs: Resistance and Paris, who were in the last car on the train.
