Life in caves
Built on rocks, Matera once represented the ‘shame’ of Italy. Namely, people lived here in caves until the 1950s. And in addition to dwellings, there are also churches on the rocks, so this graduate is a real example of adapting life to the conditions and the landscape. This is precisely why it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.
However, due to inhumane conditions, poverty and disease, the residents eventually had to move out of the gauze core. However, in the 80s, the center began to be restored and slowly adapted for tourists. The caves have been turned into luxury hotels and restaurants. And the fact that Matera 2019 was the European capital of culture
confirms that the graduate has truly developed over time.
