The ban on smoking marijuana on the streets of Amsterdam’s Red Light District came into force as part of the efforts of the first mayor of that city, Femke Halsema, to “clean up” that city area. Warning signs have been posted in the canal-crisscrossed neighborhood known for brothels, nightclubs and coffee shops where marijuana is sold and consumed. That part of the city attracts millions of tourists every year, but events in it disrupt the normal life of local residents. Persons caught violating the ban risk paying a fine of 100 euros. Mayor Halsema has promised to improve working and living conditions for sex workers and intends to reduce crime and excessive use of drugs and alcohol in the district. Discussions are underway to move sex services and drug tourism out of the city center, but residents of the proposed alternative sites are opposed. In the Red Quarter and other parts of Amsterdam, smoking will still be allowed on terraces and in cafes that sell marijuana and hashish. The Dutch authorities are known to tolerate the personal use of small amounts of marijuana. source
