In the Mexican holiday resort of Cancún, taxi drivers have protested against the ride-hailing service Uber.
Dozens of taxis blocked Kukulkán Boulevard, the only street along the hotel district, for more than an hour on Monday, local media reported. Because of the blockade, tourists had to leave the hotels on foot and walk a stretch with their luggage, according to videos posted on online networks. Some of the visitors were reportedly taken to the airport in police cars or other means of transport. After warnings from the police, the taxi drivers gave up the protest. Several attacks against Uber drivers in Cancún were recently reported. The taxi associations had previously lost a lawsuit against the opening of the ride-hailing market to Uber in the state of Quintana Roo. There are also other popular holiday destinations such as Tulum and Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean coast. Uber shares were down 1.93 percent at $29.94 in NYSE trading. /aso/dp/nas CANCUN( dpa-AFX)
