Despite recent court rulings ordering the removal of the Christmas crèches installed at the town hall of Perpignan and Béziers (Hérault), the president Les Républicains Eric Ciotti is delighted on Sunday December 25 with the presence of a crèche in the Alpes-Maritimes department. LR senators want to modify the law on secularism of 1905 in order to “preserve” these Christian symbols.

“Merry Christmas! The crib sits proudly in the hall of the Alpes-Maritimes department.” Sunday, December 25, the president Les Républicains Eric Ciotti greeted by a tweet the presence of this Christian symbol in a public building .

Recent court decisions have however ordered the removal of the Christmas crèches installed at the town hall of Perpignan by the mayor registered nurse Louis Aliot and of Béziers (Hérault) do not mayor Robert Ménard is close to this party. Twenty LR senators have proposed to modify the law on secularism of 1905 in order to “preserve” these crèches.

“Proud of our origins!” added the president Les Républicains who is also a departmental councilor for the Alpes-Maritimes. In a press release published on Thursday, December 22, around twenty LR senators claim that crèches are “cultural and not religious symbols” and “immemorial customs of French country”.

” The symbols of our customs are attacked by an extremist and wokist political movement which aims to deconstruct what we are: Christmas trees, nativity scenes, santons, galettes des rois and even Easter eggs are targeted,” wrote the right-wing senators.

” Violate the law and the Constitution with impunity”

Seized by the League of Human Rights (LDH) in summary proceedings, the administrative court of Montpellier ordered Wednesday, December 21 to the municipality of Perpignan to “withdraw the nativity scene , or pessebre (in Catalan language, editor’s note)”, under penalty of a penalty of “one hundred euros per day of slow down”. A decision made a week after that of Béziers, in the Hérault.

“It’s a nativity scene with Joseph, Mary, the Three Kings who show that we are indeed in a nativity scene catholic, contrary to the law of 1905 “of separation of Church and State, had pleaded Sophie Mazas, lawyer and president of the LDH of Hérault.

Louis Aliot, figure of the registered nurse, and Robert Ménard, mayor of Béziers close to this party, “think they can violate the law and the Constitution with impunity”, reacted to the AFP Me Mazas, judging “problematic” that the prefects of Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales have “not reacted” could “enforce the law”. During a press conference, Louis Aliot announced that he would seize the Council of State to appeal this decision, which according to him arouses “a specific stir among the population of Perpignan”.

On November 16, the Council of State confirmed the ban on that of Beaucaire (Gard), led by the far-right mayor Julien Sanchez. The crèches of Beaucaire and Béziers typeface regularly the object of lawsuits, but continue to be installed each year by the city councilors. In Perpignan, the crèche, deemed not portable by the town hall, will remain in the town hall and will be dismantled at the start of the school year in January.
