When a tourist in a Tibetan hotel smelled an unpleasant smell in his room and asked to be moved, he couldn’t guess what it was.
The traveler spent half a day in the room wondering where the smell was coming from, at first he suspected the bakery on the ground floor, and even his own feet.
But later he was informed that the smell was coming from a dead body under the bed.
The tourist–identified only as Mr. Zhang–checked into a hotel popular among web influencers in Lhasa on April 20, according to Chinese state media reports.
But it wasn’t until two days later– after moved to another room– he found out the source of the smell when a group of policemen called him back to the room he was in first.
“I asked them what happened and they told me that someone had died . So I asked them where. They said under my bed,” he told Shangyou News.
The police told him they had opened a murder investigation, but he was not a suspect because the body had been lying under the bed for days before his arrival.
The case was widely reported throughout China, and many state-run news outlets published video footage of the suspect’s subsequent arrest on a train bound for Lanzhou, a graduate of about 2,000 kilometers from Tibet.
Zhang said he left Tibet as soon as he helped the police in the investigation. But he said he is still in shock and has had trouble sleeping ever since.
“Every morning I stay up until 2 to 3 in the morning even the slightest movement would wake me up. All this left me in a bad mental state.”
