A town on a mountain, that’s how we could translate the name of the place Motovun, which otherwise got a slightly different version of the name at the time when the Celts lived there. In fact, it is neither a city nor a mountain. It is a village with about 500 souls, located on a 277 meter high hill in the heart of mainland Istria. The place is so unique that the word about it reaches thousands of kilometers away. In Asia, South Korea to be more precise, there is a well-known cartoon whose author was supposedly inspired by Motovun. And it is for this reason that several guests from the Far East have already visited the idyllic village.
Most of the wine is produced in a biodynamic way, without any additives, completely naturally.
A unique charm of Motovun in recent years, they have also added a hotel and wine shop Roxanich. They rolled up their sleeves in 2017, when the existing facility was completely renovated and extended. Two years later, a large hotel complex was opened, which does not reveal nearly all the beauty from the road, and especially not the treasure buried in the ground. It is a five-story wine cellar. A very modern winery. The view from the other side already reveals the majesty of the entire complex and, above all, how it was imaginatively placed on the slope and interwoven classical architecture with a modern touch. The beginnings of the winery go back to the times of Austria-Hungary, more precisely in 1902. Since then and until today, they also produce wine.
Purpose of the winery it was changing, from a wine cellar to an inn, during the former Yugoslavia there was a kind of food processing plant there, but now they have returned to their roots. The idea father and investor is Mladen Rožanić — hence the name Roxanich, mainly because of foreign guests who have trouble pronouncing “our” surnames. The wine and tourism heritage is now increasingly being taken over by his six daughters: Lara, Zara, Mara, Sara, Tara and Petra Each also has its own brand of wine. They even tried to bring the taste closer to their characters.
Motovun is not only a pleasant destination for a trip or vacation, but it is also closely associated with truffles. This is primarily known in the cuisine of this area of Istria. Therefore, a stop at Mirjana and Miro Kotiga, who market their products and culinary offer under the Miro Tartufi brand, is a must. Not to reveal everything, but rather just a tip: arrange with them for a presentation of the special features of these valued white and black rare gifts of nature, as well as for a tasting and a feast. Mirjana really masters it, and everything is based on homeliness, authenticity. They also offer a tour to look for truffles. any impurities, completely natural,” explains Stjepan Mraković, manager of the winery. “There is no pretense here, but perhaps what separates us from many others is that we try new methods and want to be innovative. Not only in terms of wine aging, but also in design and other approaches,” Mraković is determined and adds: “Actually, the cellar is the one which shows the guests the true luxury of everything. Usually, all design ideas are also pointing upwards, which is supposed to represent growth. It is different with us. It goes downwards, even the line on the design of our bottles indicates this. We have our own growth, the treasures below. “
In the wine shop, they have 20 different wines, including sparkling wine. Although of course they have the desire to produce and also sell more and more wine, one of the main goals is to continue to be boutique and avoid aggressive commercial production.
Anyway, Motovun doesn’t hide its magic just behind the castle entrance at the top hill, but offers much more.
Stjepan Mraković says that they do not compromise on quality.
Intertwining of wine cellar and art
Motovun hides much more than just intimates streets.
